Notes for Odessa Mae Belcher:
Odessa came to Minnesota in April of 1938, with her mother, Ella R. Hodges (Oakes). Her mother
came from Virginia to Minnesota to meet a man (George W. Wood), who she had met on a 'Lonely Hearts Club'. They had been writing back and forth for some time. Ella and George soon married.
Odessa, then married the man who lived across the road, Burt Jefferson (Cap) Stiles. They then
had 7 children. Ella and Odessa came to Minnesota in April of 1938, and Ella and George married
that same year, Odessa and Burt married December 8, 1939.
It was a hard life that Odessa had come from in the hills of Southeastern Virginia. She told of how
she received a large scar on her knee. Her and a sister, Oakey, were cutting wood, and the axe
slipped and the leg was badly cut, which was kept from their mother, so they would not get in trouble for being careless. They had wrapped it with a 'not so sterile' piece of cloth. It got infected, and her mother knew she would need medical attention, so she had to be taken 'over the next mountain' by mule to the nearest Dr. He then had 'packed the wound', after cleaning it, with gauze. She told of how the pieces of gauze had worked themselves out over a long period of time.
